2012 Rock Hall Inductees Announced, Axl Perfect for HBO

The chads have dropped and the slash marks have been tallied, resulting in a Chad (Smith, drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers) and a Slash (just Slash, like Madonna or Cher, ex-guitarist for Guns N’ Roses) being voted into the 2012 Class of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees.

Bad puns aside, here are this year’s inductees:

  • Guns N’ Roses
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • Beastie Boys
  • the Small Faces/Faces
  • Donovan
  • Laura Nyro

As for the special categories, inductees include:

  • Freddie King (Early Influence Award)
  • Don Kirshner (Ahmet Ertegun Award)
  • Cosimo Matassa, Tom Dowd, and Glyn Johns (Awards for Musical Excellence)

Next year’s induction ceremony will be the first to be produced for HBO, which is probably why Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Beastie Boys all made it in the same year.

This will probably be the biggest Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in at least a decade and who makes for a better HBO-type antihero than Axl Rose? He’s prone to Tony Soprano-esque bouts of uncontrollable rage all while being about as pale and frightening as those True Blood vampires. Put up next to the Chili Peppers and the Beasties–two of the more affable groups of guys you’ll come across in popular music–and Axl is going to come across as an even bigger ass than he usually does.

The big question regarding the 2012 ceremonies will, of course, be whether or not Axl will be joined by his former bandmates in Guns N’ Roses. The original lineup hasn’t performed together since 1990. Bands with contentious relationships typically reunite, albeit briefly, for the Rock Hall ceremonies but Guns N’ Roses are a particularly factious group. If they do all show up for the ceremony, Vegas will have to offer odds on which minute mark a fist fight breaks out on stage during their obligatory Paradise City/Sweet Child of Mine/Welcome to the Jungle medley.

HBO got rewarded for picking up the ceremony with Guns N’ Roses being inducted and I’ll no doubt be tuning in to watch Slash punch Axl in the face.

When MJ graduated from Central Michigan University with a degree in Creative Writing, he was immediately barraged with 'questions' of "What are you gonna do, teach?" He is determined to not get a job teaching. So far, so good. With music, MJ's traveled the country touring on his songs. Having spent time in places from Chicago to Seattle, LA to New Orleans, and Nashville to NYC, he is convinced that Detroit and its 'burbs have the the highest concentration of 'native' songwriting talent anywhere. Eat it, New York. You too, LA. MJ started writing for the Urbane Life in the summer of 2011. He also writes for a handful of other websites as well as an immigration lawyer. He used to work in a publishing house. He's glad he's out.
