Apartment Therapy: Closets

As you all know, it was freezing this weekend. Instead of braving the frozen tundra I spent the weekend indoors giving the apartment a little TLC. I am often rearranging and sprucing up my living space, after all it’s a small abode and keeping it clean and tidy is good for the mind.

Operation closet organization was a bit of an undertaking but completely necessary because now I look forward to getting dressed in the morning instead of scrambling to find something to wear. Here are a few tips to help you clean the clutter and dress for success.

1. Purge. Go through your closet and separate clothes into 3 piles. Keep, Donate, and Eliminate. The first rule of purging is to be ruthless. If you haven’t worn something in 1 year, get rid of it! If the garment is in decent shape then donate it to the salvation army thrift in downtown Royal Oak. Now you’ve done something nice for the community and you can write it off, just be sure to get a receipt.

2. Change closets each season. Your closet should be full of clothes for the appropriate season. It’s Michigan, you can’t wear a sundress under a parka. If you are, I’m available for routine reality checks and wardrobe advice, Call me. Switch the closets as the seasons change and purge a few items each year. It’s easier to choose outfits when you have less options.

3. Color coordinate. Finding specific pieces is a breeze when garments are grouped together by item and color. If you’re going for a certain style, you’ll always know exactly where to look. Group dresses together, as well as skirts, shirts, blazers, and pants. It also looks neat when you open those closet doors.

4. Invest in Hangers. I tossed my mismatched hangers for a more uniform look. I prefer wooden hangers because I like the weight, but plastic, metal, or velvet will all work. This does wonders for closet esthetics and helps you maintain a tidy wardrobe.

There is plenty of snow on the way, what kind of rehab does your apartment need?
