Motown Winter Blast Band Preview: The Sights

In anticipation of the 2012 Motown Winter Blast, the Urbane Life will be highlighting some of our favorite local bands that will be taking the stage at this year’s event. Keep checking back to learn more about some of the city’s best.

The Sights

The Sights are fresh off the release of their ‘Twelve in the Bar’ record, an odds and sods type compilation of rarities and non-album tracks that have amassed over the past 12 years. They’re true believers in the rock and roll spirit, eschewing digital trickery for that warm analog glow. They’re also one of the best live bands in the city. Catchy, bluesy, and raw but realized, the band’s set should be a highlight of the Winter Blast. Leader Eddie Baranek answered the Urbane Life-Motown Winter Blast questionnaire:

Q: What’s your favorite thing about winter in Michigan?

A: My favorite thing about winter in Michigan is that it makes you appreciate the other seasons. Once spring comes in this part of the world, you can feel it. Here it’s not “always 75 with no melting snow” as Jenny Lewis once sang. As winter fades into spring you can feel the collectiveness this city feels– we’ve gone through hell together, now let’s shake it off our shoes and boogie!

Q: What’s the best way to stay warm?

A: The best way to stay warm? Simple– with your special lady-friend (or dude).

Q: What was your favorite thing to do when school was cancelled?

A: I love the anticipation of school possibly closing due to snow. I love the gossip, the what if, the “is it really going to happen?” that occurs. It’s almost more exciting than the actual day off. Almost.

The Sights are playing the Motown Winter Blast on Saturday, February 11th from 9:30 to 11pm. They will be playing at the Flagstar Bank Stage.

MJ Galbraith

MJ Galbraith

MJ Galbraith is a songwriter and local musician, freelance writer, baseball enthusiast, lover of travel, and a terrible mechanic. When MJ graduated from Central Michigan University with a degree in Creative Writing, he was immediately barraged with 'questions' of "What are you gonna do, teach?" He is determined to not get a job teaching. So far, so good. With music, MJ's traveled the country touring on his songs. Having spent time in places from Chicago to Seattle, LA to New Orleans, and Nashville to NYC, he is convinced that Detroit and its 'burbs have the the highest concentration of 'native' songwriting talent anywhere. Eat it, New York. You too, LA. MJ started writing for the Urbane Life in the summer of 2011. He also writes for a handful of other websites as well as an immigration lawyer. He used to work in a publishing house. He's glad he's out.
